OpenAI launched GPT Store

Yesterday, OpenAI introduced a big update in the world of AI and chatbots: the GPT Store.

I think the second phase of building AI products on top of ChatGPT has begun.

So far, you could only brows custom GPT’s from the community via unofficial GPT’s directories (GPT Public Directory was actually a pretty good one), or on the social media channels like Twitter, Linkedin or Facebook.

But now, OpenAI launched their own, official store with categories, search and top Featured

The ChatGPT client on the web integrates this platform, showcasing a diverse collection of GPTs (Generative Pre-trained Transformers). These GPTs, created by both OpenAI partners and the broader developer community, offer a wide range of applications.

Users can explore various categories like lifestyle, writing, research, programming, and education.

The store offers a wide selection of applications ranging across categories like lifestyle, writing, research, programming, and education.

It features applications such as a trail recommender by AllTrails, a code tutor from Khan Academy, and a content designer from Canva, all of which are currently free to use.

But is it really?

Biggest problem of the GPT Store?

The GPT Store is only accessible to users subscribed to one of OpenAI’s premium plans: ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Enterprise, or the newly introduced ChatGPT Team.

One of the remarkable aspects of the store is the ease of developing GPTs. Developers can use OpenAI’s GPT Builder tool to create AI-powered chatbots by simply describing the desired functionalities in plain language.

This approach democratizes the creation of applications, enabling a diverse range of functionalities, from culinary advice to tailored coding assistance based on specific codebases.

Developers ensure the quality and compliance of these applications by undergoing a verification process. They submit their GPTs for review, which OpenAI conducts using a combination of human and automated processes.

This guarantees compliance to OpenAI’s terms of use. In the future, OpenAI aims to launch a “GPT builder revenue program,” which will enable U.S. builders to generate income from the engagement their GPTs attract.

The company will announce specific payment criteria at a later date.

The GPT Store represents a significant step towards democratizing AI app creation, potentially challenging the business models of consultancies that specialize in creating similar applications.

This launch, initially announced at OpenAI’s DevDay and later delayed, marks a new era in making AI more accessible and customizable, encouraging innovation and collaboration within the tech community.
