How to use ChatGPT in digital marketing? With advanced persona prompting

Digital marketers guide to the use of ChatGPT in everyday digital marketing activities. Such as writing SEO blog posts, email funnels, and segmented content, filling content calendars, and creating micro strategies to drive immediate effect.

I wrote this guide based on my personal day-to-day experience and tools I created for myself, so I can work faster, more creatively, and efficiently.

Let’s dive in …

I’ll try to be specific and straight to the point as possible.

As we propel into the digital age, artificial intelligence #ai and chatbots have quickly become central to many businesses’ marketing strategies.

Why, you ask?

Well, strategic AI-driven marketing can optimize your daily efforts, personalize your customer interactions, and ultimately, maximize your business’s potential.

Brief Overview of OpenAI and the Creation of ChatGPT

OpenAI, the mastermind behind ChatGPT, is a research company committed to advancing digital intelligence in a way that benefits humanity.

Well, we’ll sure see about that, but for now, we’ll take Sam Altman and his teams’ word for it, and focus more on the day-to-day task, where GPT can really come in handy.

I’ve talked with a couple of people I work with about GPT in the last couple of months. Well, who hasn’t, right? 😁

And when I was listening to their systems and the way how they use ChatGPT, I wasn’t surprised when a lot of them said, they lost that initial drive after the first couple of weeks.

But I actually, have gotten to use it more and more!

And that’s because of a couple of mini hacks I figured out and learned from others.

Create actual assistants/personas 🕵🏻 👨‍💻 👩‍⚕️

Don’t get me wrong … use it however you want and please, but since you’re reading this, I think you got bored just chatting with it and using it instead of Google search.

I’ve built myself and trained various different assistants, just as I would hire some online.

They got names, occupations, thinking frameworks, writing styles, character specifics, speak different languages, and so on.

I there are my coworkers:

💌 Emailly: The Email Marketing Ninja

👩‍💻 ZoeySays: The SEO Marketing Fairy

💶 SimonSales: The Online Sales Helper

✍️ Texterous: The Creative Copywriter

🧙‍♂️ Reactor: The Social Media Wizzard

📚 Bookzy: The eBook Machine

How to create a powerful ChatGPT persona?

Well I started with three things, and so far I’m getting the best results with:

  • DETAILED SYSTEM PROMPT; a well-rounded and well-tested (and updated) set of rules, characteristics, and knowledge specifications that the persona knows who she/he is
  • THOUGH-OUT USER PROMPT SEQUENCE; sure, you can use it in a classic conversational way, but that’s not their purpose. With the magic of combining the [system prompt] knowledge and [user prompt] amazing specific results follow as a result.
  • A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH; when working and using ChatGPT in a rush, for a specific, but i-need-it-now task its simple to forget and start a new conversation (or just hop on one old one) and ask a question (or set a task). But the solution is simple.

Or at least this is the way I do it, and it serves me well so far, but much much much can still be improved, re-calibrated, tweaked, and so on.

System prompt

With the System prompt, we create the character and skill set of the Persona. Below is an example of 👩‍💻 ZoeySays: The SEO Marketing Fairy. This is the first prompt you enter when creating a new GPT chat. You can use it both on GPT-3.5 or GPT-4. Results in v4 are much much better.

All right, now we have built a conversational Persona. Now, Zoey needs instructions on how to write an SEO blog post.

Step 1)

Hi Zoey, write an article on [TOPIC].
Keyword for this article is [long-tail topic keyword].

The keyword should also form part of the main H1 headline.

Comply with SEO best practices throughout the writing of this article.

Start with a structured blog post Index and compelling meta title and meta description for the post.

Step 2)

You will write the article in three parts:
Part 1: H1 and a Introduction and first H2 written in longer form than current.
Part 2: Three H2 headlines explained in detail
Part 3: Final H2 about the topic and conclusion

The article should be crafted in a markup format, ensuring that the long-tail keyword appears at least 6 times within the main text but should not exceed 10 times, and twice within H2 headings.

This article should integrate these URLs, turning them into hyperlink text, ensuring that they are distributed naturally within the text where they are contextually relevant.
[ADD URL'S]

Start with Part 1 and then wait for further instructions when you finish.

Step 3)

Continue with step 2 / 3.

Or tell it to fix parts you don’t like.

A systematic approach

We’ve somewhat covered the systematic approach in the previous point. Think about what are you trying to achieve and what a good result of that look like.

If you’re writing an SEO blog post, then only one reply with Persona will not be enough, since it cannot return 1200 words article in one reply. You need multiple steps on it but can iterate and get good enough results waaaaay faster.

Know your topic! Otherwise, it might get a bit funny sometimes 🙂

Here is the result (will follow up with organic data as soon as it gets some … according to SEMrush this longtail keyword should be quite simple (26 diff. levels), so we’ll see 🤷‍♂️)

Here you can access all other GPT personas. They are all very powerful and have different structures, so you’ll be able to analyze how different Prompt structures create different results.

ChatGPT in digital marketing

What I find the most useful about working with ChatGPT

For sure that’s iterating and coming up with initial concepts. But once calibrated, it can quickly become a proper content creator.

For general Content Creation

I can create fresh, engaging, and timely content faster and therefore test more things. Here is where ChatGPT really shines.

Social Media Management

The role of social media in business growth is undisputed. However, managing multiple platforms can be time-consuming. Here’s how ChatGPT can streamline your social media management:

  • Scheduled Posting:

ChatGPT can help create content for scheduled posts across various platforms. For instance, if you run a fitness brand and want to share daily workout tips on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, you can feed the AI relevant data and let it generate diverse tips for each day. This way, you’re not only maintaining a regular posting schedule but also ensuring that your content is fresh and engaging.

  • Community Interaction:

You can employ ChatGPT to interact with your community. Suppose a customer tweets about their positive experience with your product. ChatGPT can be programmed to respond to such interactions with personalized messages, enhancing customer engagement.

  • Trend Monitoring:

With the right integration, ChatGPT can help keep an eye on trending topics and generate content accordingly. For example, if there’s a surge in posts about home workouts due to a new lockdown, ChatGPT can immediately produce relevant content for your fitness brand.

Advice on Measuring and Improving the Performance of Your ChatGPT Implementation

To ensure the successful implementation of ChatGPT in your marketing strategy, it’s critical to measure its performance and make necessary adjustments. Here are some tips:

  • Set Clear KPIs:

Your KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) will depend on how you’re using ChatGPT. If it’s for content creation, you could track engagement metrics such as positioning, time on site, likes, shares, and comments.

  • Analyze and Iterate:

Regularly review your ChatGPT’s performance data to identify strengths and areas of improvement. For instance, if your ChatGPT-driven blog posts are receiving lower engagement than your manually written ones, analyze the differences and adjust your AI’s parameters accordingly.

  • A/B Testing:

Experiment with different styles and tones in your ChatGPT-generated content. For example, if you’re using the AI for email marketing, try sending out two versions of an email with different subject lines or content structure. Compare their open rates and engagement, and use these insights to refine your strategy.

The Future of Marketing with ChatGPT

Augmented Creativity

AI is not here to replace human creativity, but to augment it. ChatGPT can help spark new ideas, generate unique content, and offer fresh perspectives – all of which can enhance the creative process and result in more engaging marketing campaigns.

Automation of Routine Tasks

AI can automate routine tasks, freeing up marketers to focus on strategic initiatives. With ChatGPT, marketers can automate aspects of content creation, customer service, and social media management, to name a few.

Data-driven Decision Making
