It looks like OpenAI is teasing us again, and again – of course – it’s something big.
A recently spotted trademark application has given us a sneak peek into what might be in store after GPT-4 – and it’s the mark “GPT-5.”
This information, unearthed by Windows Latest, is stirring up quite a bit of curiosity. It points to a new direction for OpenAI, mentioning “downloadable computer software for using language model” as well as other fascinating features, such as “artificial production of human speech and text” and “natural language processing, generation, understanding, and analysis.“
But what does this all mean?
While the application’s wording keeps us guessing, it’s consistent with the language OpenAI used in the previous applications for GPT-3.5 and GPT-4.
Unfortunately, the juicy details stop there. We can’t determine from this application when or even if OpenAI has concrete plans for launching GPT-5. But it’s safe to say it’s not something that’s just around the corner.
Current Focus: GPT-4
What seems more plausible right now is OpenAI’s dedication to enhancing its existing GPT-4 model. Since unveiling GPT-4 in March and opening it to the public via API last month, it’s created quite a buzz. The integration with Microsoft’s Bing browser and the popular chatbot ChatGPT has contributed to its popularity, but it’s not without flaws.
Issues like fabricating facts and the enormous running costs are challenges that OpenAI will likely want to tackle first before moving on to the next big thing.
Even with certain features behind a paywall, GPT-4 is still a heavy burden on OpenAI’s budget.
GPT-5: A Mystery Yet to Unfold
So what’s next? Is GPT-5 the answer to OpenAI’s struggles? Will it bring breakthrough improvements, or is it just the next step in a longer journey?
One thing’s for sure, though – the world of AI and natural language processing is never boring, and I can’t wait to see what OpenAI has up its sleeve with GPT-5.
