Apple WWDC 2024: What You Need to Know

To be honest, this year’s Apple Event WWDC 2024 was not really so explosive like some in the past, but still offered couple of interesting updates.

Apple WWDC 2024

The most anticipated of all being AI, of course.

Apple Intelligence

Apple introduced Apple Intelligence, their own AI framework but not with their own MMM or even LLM. This new AI framework powers new features across iOS 18, iPadOS 18, WatchOS 11, and MacOS 15 (Sequoia). Apple focuses heavily on privacy, using on-device processing and hybrid cloud models.

It handles text summarisation, image personalisation, and more. Developers get a new toolkit for adding AI and App Intents. This lets them define actions and access AI-driven features.

ChatGPT Integration

A big surprise was Apple’s partnership with OpenAI. ChatGPT-4 is now integrated into Apple apps. This means better photorealistic image generation and powerful in-app tools. It helps with drafting, image creation, and more complex tasks. It’s free for all, with extra features for paid subscribers.

Siri AI Update?

Siri gets an AI update with Apple Intelligence. Does she really? Sure, we’ll have to try it first, but to be plain straight honest, I did expect more out of next or first Siri AI injection.

It does seem to understand conversational context better, and can handle pronouns and use your activity as context. You can type or talk to Siri, switch between text and voice, and get more personalized help.

Siri supports in-app and cross-app actions, similar to Microsoft’s Copilot.

MacOS 15 Sequoia

MacOS 15 also introduces AI-powered tools like Rewrite, Proofread, and Summarize.

They help with wording and style, creating summaries, and fixing errors. Smart Reply suggests context-based responses for emails and messages. The system also manages notifications by prioritizing important ones and hiding less critical alerts.

iPhone Mirroring

This feature allows your iPhone to mirror its screen on your Mac as long as it’s within connection range.

You can see iPhone notifications, reply to messages, and even play audio through your Mac. It enables seamless drag-and-drop functionality between devices.

Password Manager

Finally, MacOS 15 includes a built-in password manager. It offers autofill capabilities and cross-device syncing, making it easier to manage all your passwords securely.

Safari Enhancements

Safari gets several smart browsing features. Highlights automatically emphasize relevant information while you browse. The new summary tool provides quick overviews of lengthy articles, and an autogenerated Table of Contents in Reader mode helps navigate long documents easily.

Gaming Enhancements

Apple has upped its gaming game with improvements to Metal, its graphics API. This makes it easier for developers to port games to Mac. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows will launch on Mac and iPad simultaneously with PCs and consoles on November 15. Expect more game announcements throughout the year.

MacOS 15 Sequoia is designed to integrate seamlessly with other Apple devices while enhancing user productivity and security. With its comprehensive new features, it is set to provide a more unified and efficient user experience.

iOS and ipadOS updates are in general pretty boring and do not provide any worthnoty mentions.

Color icon customisation Apple, really.
